Key technical problems of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have been overcome -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment

Professor Lu Junling, Professor Wei Shiqiang and Professor Yang Jinlong from the University of Science and Technology of China have recently developed a new type of catalyst, which has overcome the key problems in the promotion and application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, relieved the "toxic shock" crisis of carbon monoxide in hydrogen fuel cells, extended the battery life, widened the temperature environment for battery use, and can also be started normally in cold winter. This research is expected to promote hydrogen energy vehicles for civilian use. The international academic journal Nature published this achievement on January 31.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

Hydrogen is considered as one of the most promising clean energy sources in the future. However, the development of hydrogen fuel cell faces many challenges, one of which is the carbon monoxide poisoning of platinum electrode in fuel cell. As the "heart" of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, the fuel cell platinum electrode is easy to be "poisoned" by carbon monoxide impurity gas, which leads to the decline of battery performance and shortened life, seriously hindering the promotion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Recently, the research team of the University of Science and Technology of China has designed a new atomic scale ferric hydroxide catalyst dispersed on the platinum surface. The catalyst can selectively and efficiently remove trace carbon monoxide from hydrogen fuel 100% in the temperature range of minus 75 ℃ to minus 107 ℃. The new catalytic material can provide full time protection for hydrogen fuel cells during frequent cold start and continuous operation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning of hydrogen fuel cells.

Lu Junling introduced that their ultimate goal is to develop a cheap, highly active and selective carbon monoxide preferential oxidation catalyst, which can not only provide full-time protection for airborne fuel cells, but also provide an effective means for the preparation of high-purity hydrogen in factories.
