Lithium-ion batteries are powering many appliances, from laptops to lawn mowers. But because of their reliance on flammable components, lithium-ion batteries tend to burn when damaged. Researchers at the University of Maryland, College Park have redesigned lithium-ion batteries to store more electricity while being less flammable.

As the main component of lithium-ion batteries, the organic electrolyte commonly used in the electrolyte is a flammable material. There have been previous attempts to replace these organic electrolytes with solid electrolytes or water-based electrolytes. The research team of materials scientist Chunsheng Wang at the University of Maryland, College Park has developed a new salt-rich water-based electrolyte (WiSE) that forms a protective solid barrier around the electrode, preventing the electrode from tearing the water molecules inside the electrolyte, while also preventing the electrode from tearing the water molecules inside the electrolyte. developed a graphite-based cathode that can work with WiSE at 4 volts or more.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

The research team also noticed that the cathode material can store about 30 percent more charge than conventional cathode materials. In addition, the new WiSE battery will not require cobalt, a toxic metal found in traditional lithium-ion cathodes, making it safer for consumers and the environment.
